Not a marketplace — an ecommerce platform. You bring the audience, own the customer relationship and control the checkout. Usually runs in parallel with marketplaces: marketplaces handle discovery, Shopify handles brand and repeat customers.

FAQs about selling on Shopify

Does Shopify charge a marketplace commission?

No — Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform, not a marketplace, so there's no commission on sales. You pay a monthly subscription (from $39/month on Basic) and payment processing through Shopify Payments at 2.9% + $0.30 (Basic, US rate; lower on higher tiers).

What's a transaction fee on Shopify?

If you process payments through a gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee — 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, 0.5% on Advanced. The fee is in addition to whatever the third-party gateway itself charges. Using Shopify Payments removes the transaction fee entirely.

Why run Shopify alongside marketplaces?

Marketplaces drive volume and discovery; Shopify drives brand and repeat business. Most experienced sellers run both — list new stock on every marketplace for reach, then convert repeat buyers to direct purchases through the Shopify storefront where you keep more of every sale.

How does Shopfront sync stock between Shopify and marketplaces?

Shopfront keeps Shopify and your marketplace listings on the same inventory. Sell an item on Depop and the Shopify stock count drops; archive a listing on Grailed and the Shopify product gets archived. Item updates flow the same way — change the title or price once, watch it propagate.

Can I import an existing Shopify catalogue into Shopfront?

Yes — Shopfront pulls existing Shopify products in as the starting catalogue. From there you can push them to any connected marketplace without re-keying photos, titles or descriptions.
