Yami-kawaii (literally 'sick cute') emerged in Harajuku around 2014 as a kawaii subgenre that fused pastel innocence with darker iconography around mental illness, self-harm and pharmaceutical imagery. The wardrobe leans pastel pink and white, but introduces motifs that sit at the edge of provocation: bandage prints, syringe and pill graphics, sad-bunny mascots, broken-heart accessories and 'menhera' (mental-health) themed pins and badges. The Menhera-chan mascot, created by illustrator Ezaki Bisuko, became one of the visual anchors of the scene. Listen Flavor and Galaxxxy were among the first brands to commercialise the look, and it has since spread through Pinterest and Tumblr as both a fashion and a youth-culture statement about vulnerability and the limits of 'perfect cute'. It overlaps with jirai-kei and yume-kawaii but distinguishes itself by foregrounding mental-health iconography.

Not Jirai Kei — Yami Kawaii is the pastel-and-medical Harajuku scene centred on mental-health mascots; Jirai Kei is the darker, more dramatic 'landmine girl' style with monochrome ribbons and ouji-leaning silhouettes.
