About

Vaporwave began in 2010 as a music microgenre on Bandcamp and SoundCloud, with releases by Macintosh Plus and James Ferraro repackaging muzak and corporate jingles into hauntological collages. The visual identity — Helios busts, palm trees, Windows 95 dialogue boxes, katakana, gradient grids — quickly outgrew the music and became a dominant Tumblr aesthetic by 2014. Fashion translated late, mostly through graphic tees featuring Roman statues over magenta sunsets, oversized sport-jersey silhouettes, and Hawaiian shirts referencing the dead-mall imagery the music sampled. The look has cycled in and out of fast fashion since, but secondhand resale on Depop still moves loud all-over-print shirts, fishbone-patterned hoodies, and any tee bearing the words 'aesthetic' or 'vaporwave' rendered in mistype Japanese characters.

Not synthwave — vaporwave is ironic, slowed, and elegiac about consumer collapse, while synthwave is sincere and adrenalised about 1980s action-film optimism.
