About
The Rockers were the British motorcycle subculture of the late 1950s and 1960s that defined themselves against the Mods — they rode British twin-cylinder cafe racers (Triumph Bonnevilles, Norton Commandos, BSAs) instead of Italian scooters, listened to American rock and roll instead of mod soul and R&B, and dressed in heavy leather instead of tailored Italian suits. The wardrobe codes are tight and durable: black leather perfecto or Belstaff Trialmaster jacket painted with band logos and pin badges, slim raw or cuffed Levi's, plain white tee with cigarettes rolled in the sleeve, silk neckerchief or aviator scarf, Lewis Leathers gauntlets, engineer or motorcycle boots, leather peaked cap, slicked pompadour or quiff hair. The Mods-vs-Rockers seafront brawls of 1964 (Brighton, Margate, Clacton) made them tabloid villains; their style anchors every subsequent biker-greaser revival.
Not Greaser — Rockers are specifically British, ride British cafe racers and overlap with the Ace Cafe scene; Greaser is the parallel American 1950s working-class style with hot rods and pomade.
