About
Reggae fashion grew out of the Rastafarian movement in 1960s Trench Town, Kingston, where the red-gold-green Ethiopian flag colours signified spiritual allegiance to Haile Selassie and resistance to colonial rule. Bob Marley's wardrobe — denim, military fatigues, the knitted crochet tam protecting his locks, and embroidered Ethiopian-flag detailing — codified the global look from the mid-1970s onward. The aesthetic emphasises breathable Jamaican-climate fabrics: hemp, cotton crochet mesh, loose linen shirts, and string-vest weaves. Lion of Judah motifs, Garvey-inspired prints, and dub-poet imagery anchor the graphic vocabulary. The look has moved well beyond its religious origins into global festival wear and a sustained influence on streetwear — A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Bob Marley's grandchildren continue the mainstream visibility, with vintage Marley merchandise and Trojan Records reissues holding strong Depop demand.
Not rude boy — reggae's wardrobe is loose, natural-fibre, and Rasta-coded, while rude boy style runs sharp tonic suits and narrow ties from the same Jamaican lineage.
